How I Use Technology to Make My Writing Better

I love technology. Give a gadget, an app, widget, a website that offers something cool and I will find a way to use it in my life. I use a combination of the things I listed in order to do my writing, and I thought I would share them with you.

                       – As note apps go this one is the platinum standard. You can do everything from taking text notes, to audio notes, video notes, it will even let you write a handwritten note. I use Evernote for outlining stories or writing the beats. I find it easy to open write down a few bullet points then close it back up. I also keep story ideas in there that I haven’t completely fleshed out. As I think of things I add it to the folder.

                                – I have a sad, sad, story of a time when I wrote an entire novel, and then the laptop blue screened on me, and I lost everything. Nothing like watching a year of your life be erased in an instant. Because of that, I vowed it would never happen again. Google Docs is saved to Google’s servers therefore unless one of the apocalypses happens it’s a safe bet you won’t be losing your work. Also, there are Google Doc apps for most devices so if you find yourself somewhere with some time to kill you can pull out your phone login and get some word count.

                                    – I found this site after I signed up for college classes and I was given a free account through the school. Grammarly is a site that basically line edits your work for you. It will suggest punctuation changes as well as some sentence restructuring and possible words for words you are using too often. Not only does it make these suggestions, but it tells you why the suggestion was made. I find it to be very useful in helping me add polish to my work before sending it off to my editor.

Autocorrect – If you’re like me autocorrect can be the bane of your existence. However, I have found a useful way for it to help you with your editing process. I find that when I am writing a first draft, I tend to bounce back and forth between the present and past tense. So when I go back to do my edits it is a very tedious process of highlighting and changing or deleting a few letter to correct the tense. Autocorrect makes this process so much easier by offering you the opposite tense of the word you place the cursor in. It has literally taken hours off of my editing time.

Well, I hope that you enjoy this blog post, and it helps you elevate your writing. If you have any questions, you can find me at I’d be happy to help in any way I can. If I do not write you back, listen to the Self Published Audiocast to see if I answered your question there.
